The VWT4 Owners Club & The VWT4 Forum: The VWT4 forum was designed to allow a small likeminded group of friends to stay in touch with each other and discuss the merits and uses that each intended to put their Vw T4's to and discuss any technical issues or modifications that they intended to carry out. Since the original idea the forum has gone from strength to strength and grown exponentially as the T4 has become the preferred vehicle of choice for Surfers, Campers, Canoeist , Kayakers, Wind Surfers, Climbers, Mountain Bikers & families. Jimbo Young: founder of the VWT4Forum explains his motivation for starting the VWT4Forum: For much of my youth I had been into motorbikes and the muscle car/street rod scene, as with everything in life, sometimes you have to make compromises, as there is only so many hours in the day and so much space in the garage: So being as bikes were my first luv – and the fact you can store many bikes in the space that one muscle car takes, I decided to concentrate on the bikes: with the growth of my family I needed a way to get the bikes and the family to events: I'm particularly fond of the Isle of Man TT so I was on a mission to find the ultimate vehicle to cope with my hobbies & lifestyle. It had to cope with my demands: Carry two full size Motorbikes, spares and tools securely and out of sight (race days). Tow and launching the jet ski - and also double as a changing room Comfortably haul a ton of scuba diving gear and up to four divers in comfort & be a secure storage area to leave kit in. Convert into a sleeper and carry pushbikes with comfort. As an everyday vehicle to work etc, be just slightly different that it will stand out in a crowd, but not too "come nick me" Be powerful enough to sit happily at a "Ton" (on the autobarn of course) & be capable of giving 40+ mpg when cruising/towing etc. I'd already owned couple of MkII Golf GTi's so I was well aware of the Vw build quality and the inherent potential of the VW marque and I'd always loved the early Type 2's but I really needed a large rear load area to cope with my lifestyle so the T4 was the perfect answer! In January 2003 I acquired my first T4 1.9 td1 swb and the T4 has just grown on me ever since! As a lot of my vehicle history has involved modding every vehicle I have ever owned, it did'nt take long for my attention to turn to the T4. Despite having been to hundreds of shows over the years I had never been to a dedicated Vw Van show so in 2003 I went to Vanfest in the Malvern Hills: I was amazed to find such a huge, friendly and dedicated bunch of people! In those days as the T4 was still in production, so it had not yet been taken into the hearts of the VW community and the T4 was only represented by a few trade stands in what was still an almost exclusively Air cooled community! Over the following months & then years, I spent many nights earching the net trying to find a place to discuss my T4 with other like minded T4 owners without success. I was a little out of place posting about a water cooled front engined van on staunch Air Cooled forums and the Vag forums although friendly were a little bemused at my intention to modify and develop what to most was a working van, I don't think that they understood my passion for the T4. I found the French and Dutch T4 forums and they were a real inspriration and really cool people but I was hampered by my limited knowledge of the languages!

Why A T4 ?

The T4 makes an ideal recreational vehicle due to the large load area and the economy offered by the engines. The firstTransporter (UK, Ireland & Northern Europe or Eurovan (US and Mexico), was the first front-engined van produced by German automobile manufacturer Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles. It is the fourth generation of van produced from the linage of the famous classic VW Type 2 van. The Transporter name refers to the commercial version of the T4, whilst the people carrier was termed the Caravelle and Multivan. All versions are commonly referred to as the T4, a terminology that retrospectively designates the T1,T2 & T3 as the previous generations, these VW commercial vehicles all share the Volkswagen T platform.The T4 was first released in 1990 and was radical move by the Volkswagen Group.

The Idea Dawns on Me!

During Vanfest in the Sumer of 2005, I camped up with some friends who were also into T4's, sitting round the BBQ, after a few beers and late into the Saturday night, the discussion came about how we could stay in touch and discuss our experience with our Vans – It was at this point I thought and said "I could start a T4 Forum!”

So almost 2 years on from the initial idea, the VWT4 forum has over 2000 members from across the World – as far as the States, Canada, New Zealand & even Oz,

I have tried to stay true to the intial idea: and the forum is still growing but the idea worked: it has allowed a few like minded people to stay in touch and I hope it will continue to do so!
